Spinifex artistic direction: Tobias Klein

Spinifex tour in September

Spinifex is going to tour in France, Germany, Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary and Italy. The line-up includes John Dikeman on tenor and soprano saxophones, a collaboration that started last summer in Siberia. The photo shows us with Lake Baikal in the background.
Next week, we will be featured at the Free Flow Fest in Puglia, Italy for 4 shows --- a most promising perspective indeed --- and after that we'll have 6 more shows in as many different countries.
With kind support from the Performing Arts Fund NL and from Multibus.

Reviews of the recent Spinifex CDs

In 2015, Spinifex released the quintet album Veiled and a CD by the 12-piece ensemble Maximus. Both CDs were also part of the festive 5-CD album Spinifex 2005-2015. They are available at Trytone, CDBaby, itunes
The releases have received great reviews, here's a short selection:
“Ambitious yet unpretensious, tight, catchy but also fearlessly exploraory and experimental.” (Dave Foxall, Jazz Journal UK)
“What’s exciting—and impressive—about Spinifex’s music is the way the group manages to absorb and synthesize a variety of influences (jazz, punk, metal, Indian, etc.) and then produce something greater than a simple grab-bag of styles. A parallel feat, they’re also able to foreground technical mastery via incredibly tight, complex structures and at the same time leave room for freer play and discovery. If you haven’t heard Spinifex yet, now is the perfect time to dive in.” (Eric McDowell, Free Jazz Collective)
"Unüberhörbar spitze ... Musik die sich kaum um die Einordnung in eine Passform schert. Avantgarde, viel Jazz, aber auch durchaus harter Rock und Noise sind die Elemente ..." Jazz 'N' More, CH (Christof Turnherr)
"Veiled' has got it, because it's so on target, supertight, groovy, transparent, contrapuntal, marvelously playful, almost (!) unpretensious, catchy and just well rounded off, so there is no other choice than to be overjoyed by listening… It's rare that it succeeds to present a concept which was thought to be complete and accomplished, in such a refreshing and contemporary manner." Freistil, AU
***** “Throughout this festive CD, there are not only energy blasts. There is detail and thoroughness and passages which follow the most seminal of orchestral models, Duke Ellington’s … the Spinifex formula has become a very serious case of European jazz. What’s done is among the best one can find today in this music business … this record puts us in heaven.” Rui Eduardo Paes, jazz.pt
“Brilliantly composed and executed … abounding creativity, highly recommended!” Kris Vanderstraeten, Jassepoes

Looking back: Spinifex tour in Portugal, july 2016

In july, Spinifex toured in Portugal and Galicia, playing 10 shows in as many days. We are glad that we will return soon: in july 2017, Spinifex will collaborate with 5 Portuguese improvisors and form the Spinifex Plus ensemble, having been invited by the Jazz no parque festival at Serralves, Porto. For this project, we will adapt material which we have performed and recorded with Spinifex Maximus last year.
